In rural areas across England, accessing essential government services can often be a significant hurdle. Long travel times, limited public transport options, and inconsistent broadband coverage create barriers for rural residents that people in other parts of the country may not face. As the Rural Services Network (RSN) continues to champion digital inclusion, GOV.UK One Login presents a practical solution to help close this gap.
GOV.UK One Login offers a single, secure method for accessing a growing number of government services online. With just one login and one identity check, users can access government services, such as Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, applying for a vehicle operator license or applying for a HM Armed Forces Veteran Card without the need to remember multiple passwords or navigate numerous websites. The system is designed for simplicity, security and inclusivity, with the needs of users, including those in rural communities, in mind.
As the RSN often highlights, rural communities can struggle with digital connectivity. This disparity can lead to digital exclusion and missed opportunities. GOV.UK One Login helps address these barriers by enabling straightforward access to government services and by making it easier for people to access what they need, when they need it.
A report by the Good Things Foundation underscores the value of such initiatives, showing that for every £1 invested in digital inclusion, there is a return of nearly £10 to the economy. GOV.UK One Login supports this by:
Reducing administrative burdens: One login for multiple government services means less time managing accounts and remembering passwords
Multiple verification avenues: You can prove your identity in a number of ways, even if you don’t have traditional ID documents
Offering support: Help is available online, by phone, and in-person at selected Post Office branches, ensuring even those with lower digital confidence can get set up
As RSN Chief Executive Kerry Booth notes, improving digital inclusion is about ensuring equitable access to opportunities and services. GOV.UK One Login is a tangible step toward achieving that objective, helping to keep rural communities connected, informed, and empowered.
It is important to note that while many key services are available, the platform is continuously expanding, with the goal of incorporating over 100 government services by autumn 2025.
Setting up your GOV.UK One Login is a straightforward process. You will need an email address, a phone number, and a form of identification, such as a passport or driving licence.
You don’t need to sign up until you need it, but when you do, it’s quick and straightforward.
