Looking To 2026: Our Focus For Rural Communities

As we look to 2026, the context for rural services and local governance continues to evolve.

Local government structures may shift. Strategic authorities may develop. Boundaries may change. But regardless of how governance is reshaped, one principle must remain firm: rural communities need a strong and effective voice on the national stage.

At the Rural Services Network, our work in the year ahead will focus on three clear areas.

Championing The Rural Voice

Wherever decision-making sits, whether within local authorities, combined authorities or emerging strategic structures, rural communities must not be overlooked.

Too often, policy and funding decisions are shaped by metrics that do not reflect the realities of rural life. Our role is to ensure that rural needs, costs and challenges are clearly evidenced and understood. In 2026, we will continue to represent rural communities and our members nationally, making the case for fair funding, rural-focused policy and place-sensitive decision-making.

Supporting Our Member Organisations

Our members deliver vital public services in challenging circumstances.

We see the Rural Services Network as an extension of our members’ teams, providing insight, analysis and practical support to help them deliver effectively for their communities. Through our policy work, briefings, data and engagement with government, we will continue to support members to navigate change and make the strongest possible case for rural services.

Sharing The Latest Thinking And Innovation

Across rural England, innovation in service delivery and community-led solutions is already taking place.

Through our programme of member exclusive events and the National Rural Conference, we will continue to share the latest thinking, research and good practice. By bringing people together, we enable learning, collaboration and the spread of ideas that can strengthen rural services and outcomes.

As we look to 2026, our purpose remains unchanged: to ensure every person, in every place, has access to the services and opportunities they need to thrive.
