Councils urged to take control of bus services

The website LocalGov.co.uk reports on the news that Buses Minister Nusrat Ghani MP has written to local authorities to remind them that they have the freedom to take greater control of bus services.

The letter was sent on 17 May as the Government and businesses were celebrating #LoveYourBus day to encourage more people to travel by bus. Similarly, the BBC covers a new report by the UK transport watchdog Transport Focus that advised that bus tickets should be cheaper and easier to buy with contactless technology to attract more young people.

The report, Making Bus a Better Choice for Young People, also recommended companies should install wi-fi and USB charging points on board.

Transport Focus director David Sidebottom said that many young people do not feel that services were designed for them: ‘Young people want using the bus to be as simple and intuitive as ordering pizza. Bus operators and local authorities must seize the opportunity to cater for their customers of the future.’
