Social Care model suggested

Former cabinet minister Damian Green has today published a report with the think tank Centre of Policy Studies in which he argues that current social care is inadequate, and the Government should be spending an addition £2.5 billion annually, according to the Guardian.

Green suggests taxing the winter fuel allowance and using any savings from the upcoming spending review.

He adds that as ‘a last resort’ over-50s could be asking to pay a one per cent national insurance surcharge ‘for a guarantee that their personal finances will not be exhausted by the costs of social care, and that they will be looked after whatever their condition.’ Labour’s John McDonnell called the proposed changes ‘a tax on getting old’.
