Rural 'not-for-profit' garage fuel price cut

A small rural petrol garage in Hawes, North Yorks, ‘one of the remotest spots in the country’, has attracted long queues as motorists flock to benefit from its low fuel prices, according to The Sun.

Dale Head Garage was England’s first community-run petrol station and operates on a not-for-profit premise, allowing it to keep prices lower than at most chain fuel stations. Hawes is one of four places in England classed as so remote it qualifies for a 5p government rebate on petrol, which also helps to keep prices low.

The report noted that the number of petrol stations across Britain has dropped from 37,000 in 1970 to 8,600 in 2013.

The Hawes station was taken over by residents in 2017 after they feared they would be left miles from the nearest filling station. Coun Blackie, who is responsible for setting the price of fuel, said that ‘affordable fuel is invaluable if our rural communities are to have a bright future’.
