Rural households likely to pay up to third more for energy, warns Labour

InYourArea reports that Labour analysis has found households in rural areas will be worst affected by rising energy bills

The party issued that rural households will pay around a third more to heat their homes on average as prices rise, partly due to a higher proportion of low-energy-efficiency homes in those areas and reliance on oil to heat their properties, which is not covered by Ofgem’s price cap.

Shadow DEFRA Secretary Jim McMahon said the government’s £200 energy discount/loan would “do nothing to tackle the bill hikes people in rural communities have been facing every year.”

However, a government spokesperson highlighted that the government is “committed to improving the energy efficiency of all UK homes, including rural homes, which is why we are investing £6.6 billion to support that aim, ultimately cutting energy bills and reducing households’ exposure to volatile global gas prices.”
