A NEW broadband scheme aims to boost business in the North Yorkshire market towns of Malton and Norton.

But firms must act quickly as funding deadlines mean that applications for grants must be submitted by 30th April 2012.

Grants of up to £500 are on offer to businesses in the twin- towns – thanks to the efforts of Ryedale District Council and York, North Yorkshire & East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

"Ryedale District Council has been working to identify broadband issues and needs in the area," said Julian Rudd, head of economy and housing for the local authority.

"Research has shown that businesses that are able to access quality broadband can maximise their growth and effectively use the technology to be competitive and develop.

"RDC secured funding for a pilot project, working with the York, North Yorkshire & East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which focuses on providing help towards upgrading internet connections for businesses at York Road Industrial Estate at Malton.

"However, as some funding is still available, we are now able to extend this offer opportunity to businesses across Malton and Norton who have the ability to access high speed broadband. "

Each business will be able to access a grant of up to £500

This can be used to contribute to the cost of either the connection charge, contract, new software or training associated with the use of high speed broadband, and / or advice from an IT specialist who can review and make specific recommendations on how high speed broadband can be of benefit.

Limited funding is available and will be on a first come basis. Applications must be received by 30 April 2012.
