Pubs 'at heart of rural communities'

COUNCILS in Sussex are encouraging landlords to boost trade and help put the pub at the heart of rural communities.

A special open day will be hosted by Wealden District Council, East Sussex Council and the Pub is the Hub initiative.

It will highlight ways pubs can diversify what they offer, to deliver or host services that the local community need.

Attendees will also have the chance to chat and network after the presentations over a buffet lunch.

The event will take place from 11am to 1pm on Tuesday (19 April) at the Reid Hall, Boreham Street, East Sussex.

Pub is The Hub chief executive John Longden said the initiative had already been incredibly successful in other counties such as Norfolk, Cornwall and Yorkshire.

"Our vision is that rural pubs are often able to accommodate other essential rural services that have disappeared or are about to disappear from rural communities such as shops, post offices and libraries.

"Our job is to match those gaps in rural services with viable pub businesses.

"This ensures the long term viability of the pub business, local suppliers, local employees and even the community itself. It's a win-win situation for all involved."

Wealden Councillor Roy Galley, cabinet member for economic development. "Pubs in rural areas such as Wealden are often the focal point for the community."

"By linking up with Pub is The Hub to offer something beyond food and drink, at which they excel, publicans will bring in extra customers whilst also strengthening their role at the centre of their communities.

"We are pleased to be working with Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council on this new initiative for rural services across the county.

Pub is The Hub has helped hundreds of rural pubs in England and Wales provide a home for vital rural services.

As well as serving food and drink, pubs now serve as Post Offices, shops, libraries, internet cafes, tourist information points and much more.
