Potential £1 billion boost for local charities with new recycling scheme

Local charities could receive £1 billion from the proceeds of a can and bottle deposit return scheme, according to research by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE)

One in five people said that. when using a UK-wide deposit return scheme, they would donate the deposit they’d paid on drinks cans and bottles to charity all of the time. A further 19 per cent said they would donate the deposit most of the time and 34 per cent said they would donate at least some of the time.

CPRE emphasised that by including the option to donate deposits to charity, the UK could build on the success of the plastic bag charge, which has reduced usage by over 80 per cent and raised £66 million for charities in 2016 – 17.
