MPs to examine how Whitehall can ensure effective devolution

The Local Government Chronicle reports on the launch of a new inquiry examining the effectiveness of devolution in England

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Devolution is calling for evidence on how central and local governments can work together more effectively, and what reforms are needed in Whitehall to improve the outcomes of devolution for other regions of the country.

The chair, Andrew Lewer MP (Con), said: 'There has been substantial focus on the role of local authorities in delivering devolution, but we are now interested in casting the spotlight on the potential barriers that exist in Whitehall to effective devolution.’

He maintained that ‘we are keen to assess the reality of powers currently allocated to local authorities from Westminster, and are also interested in specific case studies'.
