The final article in Rural Services Network (RSN) chief executive Graham Biggs and Young Somerset chief executive Nik Harwood’s mini-series for Further Education News reported this week on how the coronavirus crisis has thrown rural connectivity into the spotlight - an issue which the RSN has been campaigning on for years

Rural pupils are being left behind by poor connectivity, they argue, being unable to log on to lessons from home due to poor internet connection.

Digital learning has potential to unlock accessibility issues for some students even in normal times, but poor internet speeds can present insurmountable difficulties for those learning from remote areas.

The Government’s wider plans to ‘level-up’ the UK and accelerate the nationwide rollout of world-class broadband must focus on underserviced not-spots, with the current crisis only making the need more urgent.
