Speaking at the Manchester Science and Industry Museum, Boris Johnson said that London and Manchester have thrived because they are led by mayors. He added that council leaders will enjoy greater powers and cities, counties and towns will become ‘more self-governing’. He has also promised £1.33 billion to support 100 towns across the UK develop better transport, broadband, libraries, art centres, parks and youth services, which comes in addition to the Stronger Towns Fund and Future High Streets Fund that were announced by Theresa May. However, Cllr Martin Hill, the County Councils’ Network spokesperson for devolution, said that large cities fare differently under mayors than counties: ‘While this model can work in large cities and urban areas there is little evidence it is suitable for large and diverse county areas.’
