Business leaders call on PM for further devolution

The Business Desk reports that business leaders in the north of England have called on the Prime Minister to ‘kick-start’ devolution

One hundred business leaders have signed the ‘Devo 100’ letter demanding that powers are transferred from Whitehall to elected mayors and local leaders to ‘energise the economic vision of the Northern Powerhouse’.

The Northern Powerhouse currently has elected mayors in five regions – Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester, Tees Valley, Sheffield City Region and North of Tyne. The Northern Powerhouse was championed by George Osborne under former Prime Minister David Cameron but seemingly stalled under Theresa May.

After new Prime Minister Boris Johnson used his first speech to pledge a high-speed rail link between Manchester and Leeds and pledge his commitment to the initiative, hope for action has increased.
