Theresa Villiers appointed Environment Secretary

The Guardian reports on the appointment of Boris Johnson’s new Environment Secretary, Theresa Villiers

The paper argues that Villiers has a ‘weak’ track record on the environment and is ‘strong’ on free trade. Previous Environment Secretary Michael Gove was praised for a ‘genuine’ commitment to environmental standards.

It notes that because Gove remains in cabinet as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster with a role in Brexit negotiations, there is still a chance that he may weld some influence on the negotiations regarding food and farming standards.
