Seized Criminal Cash Funds Rural Crime Cameras

Essex Police has launched an innovative initiative to help tackle rural crime by installing solar-powered trail cameras in crime hotspots across the county.

Funded through money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, the cameras are being deployed by the force’s Rural Engagement Team as part of Operation Around. The cameras are used to monitor areas affected by offences such as hare coursing, fly-tipping and the theft of plant and machinery.

Rural Engagement Officer PC Luke Jones said the cameras provide a practical solution in areas where traditional CCTV coverage is limited, helping to deter criminals and gather valuable evidence. Deployments are based on crime pattern analysis and intelligence, with landowners consulted before cameras are installed and signage used to highlight that surveillance is in operation.

Farmers have welcomed the scheme, reporting increased reassurance and saying the cameras have already helped deter unwanted activity on their land.

The initiative has already seen cameras deployed across 11 district areas in Essex, protecting farmland, rural roads and other vulnerable sites.
