Government Invests £1B in Rural Broadband: Bridging the Digital Divide

The Government committed to spend £5 Billion through Project Gigabit, a programme aimed at ‘delivering lightning-fast, reliable broadband to every corner of the United Kingdom.’

They have recently unveiled details of the signing of 6 new contracts valued at over £450 million, which will enable broadband providers to begin surveying work immediately. These contracts are crucial steps toward fulfilling the Government's commitment to ensuring that even the most remote areas have access to reliable and fast internet connectivity.

Independent broadband provider CityFibre has secured contracts to upgrade infrastructure in various regions including Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Sussex, Kent, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Milton Keynes. Additionally, a contract has been awarded to Connexin, based in Hull, to upgrade premises in Nottinghamshire and West Lincolnshire, further extending broadband coverage to rural communities.

Full-fibre broadband offers significantly faster speeds compared to traditional copper cable networks, with the capability to deliver speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second. This upgrade is expected to not only enhance internet connectivity but also stimulate economic growth and improve quality of life in rural areas.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, these contracts include commitments to support community initiatives and provide employment opportunities. CityFibre has pledged to offer 40 apprenticeships across the UK in telecoms and highways maintenance, while Connexin has committed to supporting apprenticeship programmes and community initiatives.

The Government's investment in rural broadband infrastructure is part of a broader effort to ensure equitable access to digital services across the UK. With gigabit coverage reaching 80% of the country and on track to achieve 85% coverage by 2025, the UK is making significant strides in improving digital connectivity, particularly in rural areas.

For members of the Rural Services Network and residents in underserved rural communities, this investment represents a step forward in addressing digital inequality and unlocking opportunities for economic development and social connectivity.
