Help for towns to boost local businesses

Boosting businesses in market towns by encouraging people to shop locally is the theme of an event in North Yorkshire in February.

The subject of the seminar is ‘Shop Local Schemes.’ If you are thinking of setting up a Shop Local Scheme in your town and would like to learn from the experience (good and bad) of towns which have already done it, or if you have a Shop Local scheme already and would like to network with other towns and consider how you could improve or expand your scheme, this seminar is for you! Alternatively, if you would just like to know more about Shop Local Schemes, why people start them and what the benefits are, there’s no better way to find out.

Programme

The programme will include presentations of existing Shop Local Schemes and an overview of the Do’s and Don’ts in the morning and practical workshops in the afternoon where you will get the opportunity to work in groups to consider either how to set up a shop local scheme or how to improve and expand an existing scheme.

Help for towns to boost local businesses

Boosting businesses in market towns by encouraging people to shop locally is the theme of an event in North Yorkshire in February.

The Shop Local Schemes seminar is being jointly organised by Action for Market Towns and North Yorkshire County Council and will be held in Knaresborough on Thursday, February 25.

Debbie McGrath, of Action for Market Towns, explained: “Many towns are looking at Shop Local Schemes, such as loyalty cards, to encourage shoppers to support local businesses. We want to help towns learn from the experiences (good and bad) of towns which have already done it.”

Caterham in Surrey is one town which has launched a successful Shop Local Scheme and the organisers will be at the seminar to explain how it works. The seminar will also look at the ‘Dos and Don’ts’ of successful Shop Local Schemes and there will be practical workshops on how to set up a scheme, or improve and expand an existing scheme.

Debbie added: “This is a very practical event to help towns to help their local shopping centres thrive and will be useful to town councils, community groups and town partnerships.”
