Durham County Council is in the process of carrying out conservation character appraisals on many villages.
Next in line for the spotlight are Annfield Plain, Bishop Middleham, Lartington, Mickleton, Staindrop and Trimdon Village.
Local residents are encouraged to offer their views on draft character appraisals drawn up by the authority's heritage team.
The draft document includes future management proposals and offer the chance to discuss any boundary changes to the designated conservation areas.
The public consultation lasts until 28 September, said councillor Neil Foster, cabinet member for regeneration and economic development.
"The purpose of character appraisals is to make sure that the unique characteristics and historic features of our conservation areas are protected and where possible enhanced, whilst ensuring that they meet the needs of modern communities.
"I hope local residents and businesses will help us build a detailed picture of what is special about the area they live and work in, by taking part in the consultation events."
After consultation, documents will go to the council's cabinet in December for final approval.
