A LOCAL approach to funding will most benefit rural areas, say experts.
Communities who “think local” will reap the biggest benefits from the fund, rural stakeholders were told. This message was delivered at the second national RDPE Network meeting for Local Action Groups (LAGs) held in the West Midlands. Action groups would have a crucial role to play in ensuring that the money is spent on tackling key issues in villages and towns, participants heard. They would also help to maximise opportunities to improve the quality of life and safeguard and create jobs. The action groups are made up of rural representatives from across the public and private sectors, including community and voluntary groups. They receive financial assistance to implement local development strategies by awarding grants to local projects. Funding will be delivered until 2013 and administered by 63 action groups. RDPE Network programme manager Rebecca Frost said rural businesses, communities and the environment all stood to benefit from the funding. “The RDPE supports a range of schemes for land based businesses, rural tourism organisations, rural businesses and community organisations.” Small capital grants, strategic investment and action plans would help safeguard and enhance the countryside, helping communities to thrive. Money would also help bring local communities out of recession by encouraging businesses to diversify. The action groups have already developed local development strategies setting out their plans and criteria for the types of projects supported. Ms Frost said they encouraged local involvement in decision-making and encouraged people to come forward with their project ideas. “Now is the time for LAGs to make sure even more local individuals and organisations benefit by encouraging them to claim their share of the funding.” The event also featured practice sharing, knowledge transfer and a series of workshops.
